Joan Razafimaharo
“
Sadly, the private sector doesn’t care much for indigenous
architects. This is a common problem we have in Africa. So,
as a young African architect, you must train yourself to accept
this reality. I’ve been in Madagascar for six years now and got
involved in so many advocacies: improving building-permits
instruction; creating building codes—we don’t have those;
promoting sustainable architecture.”
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Joan Razafimaharo is the founder of Trano Architecture, an architecture and design firm based in Madagascar that collaborates with other Madagascar-based architects in order to modify the public and private sectors of Madagascar cities. Given that there is no architecture school in Madagascar, Razafimaharo’s work has transformed the way architecture is commissioned in the country by centering sustainability and affordability.
