Bree Newsome Bass

“ To have this moment where we demonstrate this agency as black people and I think in the same way that it demonstrated power and agency for the Greensboro Four to go and sit down at the Woolworth's counter. ”

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Bree Newsome Bass came into the public eye in 2015 when she climbed a 30-foot flagpole tearing down a confederate flag outside the state capital in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although put back up, Bass sent a clear message that the symbols and iconography in our built environment matter, creating a powerful image of a black woman asserting herself in a public space. Bass continues to organize on the local level focusing on affordable housing.
