Eleanor Raymond
“I
like the personal contact with whoever is going to use what I design.”
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Raymond was an American architect whose career spanned sixty years in practice. She designed primarily residential housing and explored the use of innovative materials and building systems. Much of her work was commissioned by women in her social group in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. One of her most ambitious projects was the Dover Sun House, completed in 1949. The house was an experiment using solar panels to harness the sun’s energy, designed in partnership with MIT scientist Maria Telkes. Raymond was also involved in various social movements, including women's suffrage. She also helped build settlement houses in urban areas throughout Massachusetts. // Additionally, Raymond renovated a townhouse for herself and her partner Ethel Power, which served as a women’s group home. Raymond and Power designed this home to match the needs of businesswomen: including an in-home workspace and a square footage reduction in the dining room and kitchen. |
