Hattie Carthan

“One of my trees was in trouble: I had to get into the act. They were getting ready to take something away from our community, something too important to loose.”

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Hattie Carthan was a community activist and environmentalist who worked in Brooklyn, New York. The decline of street trees and other services in her neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant spurred her dedication to grassroots environmental education movements. Her efforts successfully secured a living landmark designation for a rare magnolia tree. Carthan also founded the Magnolia Tree Earth Center to build educational stewardship opportunities for her Bed-Stuy neighborhood community.
